NH Media officially unveiled co-ed rock duo The Cheers yesterday, and we already love them. MyungMi and Robbin are technically rookies in the professional music world, but they already have a confidence and a stage presence that takes years for some artists to acquire. Of course, it also helps that their sound totally grabs you by the ears and shakes you until you pay attention.
The group wrote, composed, produced and choreographed their first official track and MV, “YA,“ an unfaithful-boyfriend-bashing jam that will have you dancing around with your air guitar in no time. Korean music portals describe the song simply as electronic rock, but it shouldn’t be pigeonholed into a single genre.
Think the Ting Tings’ indie rock vibe mixed with Cheap Trick-esque guitar riffs and a little GO!GO!7188 surf punk. Blend in the spice that is MyungMi’s gutsy vocals, and you get this awesome powerpop/rock ‘n roll/surfer rock bibimbap. So good.
THE CHEERS — “YA” MV
Can we please have wacky and fun newbies more often? These guys are a blast to listen to and watch with witty lyrics and amusing choreography. (Did you catch the subtle joke in the number sequence? With the wrong intonation, the number 18 becomes a really crude word. Yay! You learned something new today.)

02. “I’m Worry About You”
What do you think? Can we realistically look forward to more artists like The Cheers in Korean indie rock?
