Throwback Thursday: Clon’s “Koongdari Shabara”

By Corynn Smith | June 21, 2012

We’ve officially crossed into summer, so it’s time to break out some appropriate throwbacks. This week takes us back to the 1996 debut of hip-hop dance duo Clon and their single “Koongdari Shabara.” Beach party! Dancing! …Convicts?!

DJ Koo and Kang Won Rae were backup dancers for various artists before joining forces as Clon in the mid ’90s. And after the explosive popularity of “Koongdari Shabara” from their album Are You Ready, the pair continued on to pump out dance hit after dance hit. A couple of their most popular tracks were “Me!”, “First Love” and “Funky Tonight”.

The title words don’t actually have a meaning–they’re more of an exclamation like “boom shakalaka!”  The song tells listeners to not bottle up stress, and to shout it out instead. Let go of your worries and enjoy the summer days with a “Koongdari Shabara” (ba ba ba ba)!

Almost ten years later, the song is still a great go-to summertime cover. Most recently was 2PM and Miss A‘s for a special stage performance on Inkigayo.

What’s your favorite summer-themed throwback?
