A music chart all-kill is one hell of a way to end a two-year hiatus. But for all his efforts with the hilarious and addictive pump of the “Gangnam Style” MV, Psy‘s got a lot of international attention headed his way.
Where do we begin? Of course the riotous YouTube sensation just shy of ten million views has been filtered throughout Korea at lightning speed. The song has given Korea’s Queen of pop, BoA, a run for her money in music chart land, and has even torn Korean ringtone sites a new one. But something about the music video has international audiences sitting up, taking notice and laughing their asses off.
Everyone from Reddit to Gawker, Billboard to MSN have been hit with the “Gangnam Style” bug. Sharing, trending and freaking out about the “insane South Korean music video you have to watch,” it’s even made its rounds throughout a few celebrity Twitters. And according to YG Entertainment, they played no part in engineering the international celebrity buzz; “Gangnam Style” did that all by itself. British pop-opera star Josh Groban said, “It’s a Gangnam Style world, we’re just living in it. Amazing video,” while American rapper T-Pain took it a step further saying: “Words cannot even describe how amazing this video is…”
We’re not exactly sure where this viral outpour of attention is coming from. In a turn for the weird, a few listeners have said the line “Oppa Gangnam Style” (“Oppa” meaning older brother or male friend) actually sounds like “Open condom style.” While we’re hoping that’s not why “Gangnam” is so hot, let’s hope this newfound attention for Psy keeps the entertainer going as strong as his latest comeback for many years to come.
