These days it’s easy to throw the proverbial rock online and find an article or two offering an analysis of the phenomena that is Korean pop or even a behind-the-scenes look at the massive subculture. Luckily for those of you who who are tired of seeing a generic rehash of the same information, there’s a documentary in the works promising a true deep dive into the not-so-glamorous side of the industry.

Style Choson and Minch & Films’ 9 Muses of Star Empire is a year-long chronicle of the titular girl group from Star Empire Entertainment. These ladies, just like hundreds of other artists in the K-pop industry, put in 110% effort but don’t always receive the proportionate results. According to this tantalizing film promo, we can look forward to a gritty, no-frills inside look at the daily lives of an idol group that hasn’t quite hit the top yet.

It’s a little surprising that Star Empire let some of the content of this teaser fly — especially considering the control entertainment agencies notoriously have over their artists’ everyday lives.

Not only do we see Nine Muses diligently practicing and performing, we see the same girls sick, tired and utterly depressed. The description not only promises viewers a journey into “a world of jealousy, betrayal, and scandal,” the final line drives the film’s tone home: “No one treats me like a person.” Whoa.

Nine Muses of Star Empire, directed by Hark Joon Lee, and produced by Suk Kee Lee and Min Chul Kim, will premiere at IDFA 2012 Melkweg Music Documentary Competition on Saturday, November 17. Here’s to hoping the film gets an online release as well.
