Girls’ Generation Fans Donate Big for Anniversary

Girls’ Generation Fans Donate Big for Anniversary

By Corynn Smith | August 6, 2012

Top idol group Girls’ Generation celebrated their five year anniversary with a bang this past weekend, thanks in no small part to their dedicated fans. In honor of their favorite ladies of K-pop, eight of GG’s fan communities teamed up to donate ’9 Wells of Love’ to the international division of the Civilian Emergency Relief Center. As a result of extensive fundraising efforts, Flying Petals, COTTON CANDY, Woorissica, TheStephi, Shining Smile, Kwon Yuri 125, Deeryoona and Seople donated  ₩9,999,999.00 KRW (about $8,810 USD) to the CERC in Girls’ Generations’ name. Nine wells of safe drinking water will be erected in the Cambodian villages of Takeo, Tramkak, TaPhem and TaMuch, with each well named after one of the members. What a gift.

Plenty of fan sites from several K-pop groups participate in acts of community service every year, but this is the first time so many have banded together to donate as one. One club member stated to Naver that the eight different fan websites (all consisting of S♡NEs, of course) had wanted to unite and carry out an act of kindness for a while now, and settled on donating on August 5, the five year anniversary of the girls’ debut. “If another opportunity like this comes along, we want to continue participating in good deeds.”

Happy Fifth Anniversary to Girls’ Generation! Want to track their journey from the beginning? Check out this awesome media timeline created by English fansite, Soshified.
