As we reported this past March, 2NE1, 2PM, After School, CNBLUE, KARA, Girls’ Generation and SHINee were all nominated for categories in Japan’s 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. And four out of the seven Korean idol group nominees took home the award in their category on June 23 at the Makuhari Messe.

2NE1 came prepared for the “Best New Artist Video” category by lyrically declaring the win months ago. The MV for “I Am the Best” beat out LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” fellow K-pop idols CNBLUE‘s “In My Head,” James Blake’s “Limit to Your Love” and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s “Tsukema Tsukeru.” At the event 2NE1 performed “I Am the Best” and the original Japanese single “Scream.”

The “Best Group Video” award went to 2PM for “I’m Your Man.” Other videos nominated for this category were Coldplay’s “Paradise,” Ikimonogakari’s “Itsudatte Bokura Wa,” Maroon 5′s “Move’s Like Jagger” ft. Christina Aguilera and Monkey Majik’s “Hero.” 2PM also performed original Japanese singles “I’m Your Man” and “Beautiful.”

After School‘s pre-Japanese-debut venture with J-pop Queen Namie Amuro paid off with a win in the “Best Collaboration Video” category. “Make It Happen” beat Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis,” Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger,”  Special Others and KJ’s “Sailin’” and Miliya, Shota and Atsushi’s “Believe.”

Finally, “Best Album of the Year” went to Girls’ Generation for their self-titled Japanese debut album. Girls’ Generation, which was a certified million-seller by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, beat out KARA‘s Super Girl, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto and JuJu’s You.
