Five months after their debut last April, SM Entertainment‘s idol group EXO has seen an incredible hike in popularity. The collective twelve members of EXO-K who sing in Korean, and EXO-M who sing in Mandarin Chinese, have just a mere six tracks (in both languages) that make up their catalog, which all appear in their debut mini-album MAMA. But still the K-pop scene already loves these boys something fierce, and apparently, China does too.
Yesterday, EXO made an appearance at the 5th Annual Meng Niu Billboard Awards in Beijing at the Jinhua Spa & Resort. There, the boys came snazzy in their tuxedos and anxiously awaited the night’s proceedings. Finally, after EXO-K and EXO-M performed their title single “MAMA” together, and EXO-M performed the Chinese version of “History,” it was announced that EXO-M had received the ceremony’s “Most Popular Group of the Year” award. Their win was one of ten different categories that the Meng Niu awards had chosen to give in honor of budding rookie groups within Asia’s music scene.
But EXO-M wasn’t the only group that took home one of the ceremony’s golden star trophies. EXO as a collective group was selected by a poll that night as being the “Best Dressed.” Beating their competition with more than 80% of the votes, it just goes to show that when SM goes to China, they know how to go in style.
One of the coolest aspects about EXO winning at the Meng Niu awards is that EXO-M debuted in the same arena where the Meng Niu awards ceremony took place. The members of EXO-M remarked, “We are extremely happy and thankful to receive this award. We made our debut on this stage and now after winning this award on this stage, it seems the Meng Niu Annual Billboard Music Festival and [EXO-M] has a special connection. We will always do our best for our performances with a grateful heart and become a harder working EXO-M.”
Are you stoked that EXO is doing so well at home and abroad?
