Korean/Chinese/Japanese idol group Cross Gene has made their debut with single “La Di Da Di” from their mini-album Timeless Begins. Japanese member Takuya, Chinese member JG, and Korean members Casper, Yongseok, Sangmin and Shin were chosen for Amuse Korea and Universal Music‘s ambitious multi-country idol project that has the K-pop fan community abuzz with a polarizing debate of “hot or not.”
CROSS GENE — “LA DI DA DI” MV
We would chalk ”La Di Da Di” up to another average debut song and MV if it weren’t for the distinctly weird dance that went along with it. The dance/pop genre calls to mind a certain expectation when it comes to choreography, but Cross Gene chose controlled martial arts and meditation-inspired dance over something more busy and chaotic. The motions are tight and simple, drawing focus to the group moving as one.

If you look at the album and MV credits, it turns out that Cross Gene has a fairly impressive team behind their debut. The club-style lead single “La Di Da Di” was produced by DJ Frank E, who has worked with artists like Kanye West, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Eminem and the Black Eyed Peas. The MV was directed by Cho Soo Hyun, who was also behind the camera for f(x)‘s “Pinocchio,” TVXQ‘s “Mirotic,” SHINee‘s “Sherlock” and the Wonder Girls‘ “Be My Baby.” Finally, the choreography for “La Di Da Di” was the work of Kento Mori, who has worked with Madonna, Ne-yo and Chris Brown.
